"We're so fortunate to have received Neighbors' contribution of a new, high-efficiency ventilation system. It allowed my son to safely return home from the hospital where he underwent treatment for leukemia.”

Welcome to Neighbors

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, tasteless and odorless gas that can pose a health threat. Use the tips as a guideline to better understand carbon monoxide and how to help keep your family safe:

  • Install carbon monoxide detectors throughout the house, especially near bedrooms. Be sure to follow and understand instructions. If the carbon monoxide detector sounds an alarm, leave the house immediately and call 911.
  • Enlist a trained professional to inspect your heating system to check for leaks.
  • Make sure fuel-burning appliances, such as gas ovens, stoves, water heaters, space heaters, clothes dryers, wood burning fireplaces, etc. are installed and working properly. Consult with an expert if you suspect a gas leak.
  • Ensure there is enough ventilation when operating fuel-burning appliances.
  • Do not use gas ranges or ovens to heat your home.
  • Never operate a vehicle or other gas-powered engines in confined spaces, such as the garage.
  • Be aware of possible carbon monoxide poisoning, including flu-like symptoms like headaches, chest tightening, dizziness, fatigue, confusion and breathing difficulties. It can also cause the blood pressure to rise, making skin take a pink or red cast.
